IASB Discussion Paper on Extractive Activities

IASB Discussion Paper on Extractive Activities

On 6 April 2010, the IASB published for public comment the results of an international research project on a possible future International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) for extractive activities in the form of a discussion paper – Extractive Activities.

The extractive industries (mining and oil & gas) are important economic sectors in many economies and few jurisdictions have accounting standards in this area. The extractive activities project is a comprehensive research project that forms the first step towards the development of an acceptable approach to resolving accounting issues that are unique to upstream extractive activities. The ultimate objective of this project is to develop an International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) on accounting for extractive activities. This IFRS will supersede IFRS 6 Exploration for and Evaluation of Mineral Resources.

IASB’s deadline for comment is 30 July 2010.
